Art has the ability to make a large impact on a home. I achieve this effect by injecting modern artwork in a space that would otherwise be described as traditional or classic. By using more contemporary art pieces, a designer adds dimension and excitement.
Here are a few of my favorite tips on designing with art:
- Get an art consultant and find what you love. Keep trying until it clicks!
- Make an impact with contemporary pieces in a classical setting.
- Stack wall art, especially when you have tall or unusual mouldings.
- Create a focal point with your art.
In this living area, the layering of modern paintings adds even more depth to the mahogany wood paneling. It is crucial to layout your artwork before installing on such detailed wood walls as these. I purchased the two on the left from Aspen Grove Fine Arts Ltd.; they are a great source of modern works. A few other exquisite galleries along Aspen’s East Cooper Avenue are Galerie Maximillian and the (212) Gallery.
What I loved most about this dining room was putting the striking contemporary piece in an overall formal space. Large scale abstract art can really jazz up a room. The Louis Stern Gallery, located in West Hollywood, has a wonderful collection of modern art, including this artist, Lorser Feitelson.
On the following project I had the pleasure of working with an amazing art collection. It was exciting to incorporate these mid-century pieces into the traditional elegance of the space; bold yet reserved.
The key is to find furniture and fittings that rise to the level of both the art and the architecture of the space.
The juxtaposing of this Fernand Leger piece with the formal woodwork is vivid and daring, keeping with the masculinity of the space.
